Character History: Freshly orphaned, Cassandra Anderson was entered into Mega-City One’s Justice Academy later in life compared to most recruits – she was nine. She was deemed unsuitable but the fact she was a gifted psychic, the most gifted the Academy had ever come across, caused them to accept her anyway. She was put to training for the next twelve years of her life – endless tests, both mental and physical, thrown her way in the attempt to make her ready for the real work: being a Judge. A Judge patrolled the streets of Mega-City One, acting as judge, jury and executioner, and only the best could be taken into the fold.
Despite all her hard work, Anderson was three percent below a passing grade when it came to graduation. Again, her psychic abilities had the Chief Judge herself putting her into a Rookie uniform and deeming her worthy of taking the final test – a twenty-four hour assessment on the streets of Mega-City One. That was the real trial, and it would prove once and for all whether she was fit to be a Judge.
Anderson was assigned to Judge Dredd, possibly one of the toughest Judges Mega-City One had to offer, which didn’t help Anderson any. Still, right off the bat she did her best to be professional, even if some of the things he said to her made her feel a little bit depressed. Once on assessment Dredd told her to pick which crimes they would respond to, and Anderson picked a report coming from Peach Trees, a mega block in Sector 13, that had three dead, skinned bodies in its atrium.
They quickly established that the murder scene was a gang execution, and that Peach Trees was entirely under the control of a gang headed by Madeline ‘Ma-Ma’ Madrigal, a drug lord. When Anderson and Dredd found the distribution point on level 39, they ended up arresting a man called Kay, who Anderson was sure (but not certain) had murdered the people in the atrium. Unfortunately, Kay was a major member of Ma-Ma’s gang, who Ma-Ma could not let be taken to the Hall of Justice and interrogated. She and her cronies overrode the security system, put the block on lockdown, and had her whole gang on each level hunting for the Judges.
Anderson and Dredd fought their way upwards, a moving target being harder to hit than a stationary one. They were so difficult to get rid of that Ma-Ma locked them in a quadrant on level 76 and gunned down the entire section. Dredd, Anderson and Kay were only able to escape by jumping out of a window and landing on a conveniently placed skate park. Outside, they were able to place a call for help to the Justice Department.
Angry at such widespread slaughter of innocent people, Dredd tried to beat information out of Kay, but Anderson volunteered her abilities. She was able to get inside of Kay’s head and find out that Peach Trees was the manufacturing centre for a drug called Slo-Mo, which Ma-Ma’s clan was trying to spread through the city. With help on the way they decided to try to get to the top level and deal with Ma-Ma, but Kay escaped his bonds, took Anderson hostage, and dragged her into an elevator to head to the 200th floor before Dredd could stop him.
Being captured and losing her primary weapon were both grounds for failure, but even with dreams of being a judge gone, Anderson refused to give up. Though she was sentenced to be killed by the gang, she nevertheless killed Kay, escaped, and murdered two corrupt Judges who had come to kill Dredd – saving Dredd just in time. The two of them then went to deal with Ma-Ma, gaining access to her personal chambers after interrogating and releasing one of the clan’s techies. In the gunfight that followed Anderson was shot on her left side, just below the rib cage. She doesn’t even remember hitting the ground.
Character Personality: Anderson has always wanted to excel, and yet in small, minuscule ways, she has never quite ‘made the grade’. But for the Academy of Justice, even the smallest mistake can get you booted. Still, she persevered. Anderson has always wanted to make a difference, to serve and protect good people, to deliver justice to those who seek only to harm and ruin.
Despite the fact she failed her original aptitude test, and later only special interference from the Chief Judge kept Anderson from failing out of the Academy, she’s a lot more than what her scores might suggest. Unlike what might be expected of most Judges, Anderson seems a bit more heartfelt than the others. She is highly emotional, and she doesn’t pretend not to feel, but she faces and controls her emotions, uses them to her advantage, and doesn’t let them cloud her judgment. In reality she is light-hearted, prone to kindness and humour, but the pressures of the Academy cause her to be somewhat tense, making her sombre and serious amongst other authorities. She sticks to her guns, literally and figuratively. When someone disapproves of her, Anderson will accept it – but she will keep her opinion intact.
When she is taken into Glaxcin, she is in the midst of a transition from being uncertain and craving a certain place in life, to no longer caring about her status and wanting only to succeed in what drives her – protecting people and dispensing justice. Glaxcin will allow her to continue on this journey, but without the law of Mega-City One she will have to struggle to properly find her way amidst what is basically utter lawlessness. Not only that, the fact she is taken before she finishes her assessment (and she is under the impression she failed already) she will have to consider a different way of life than the one she has been expecting. Without the constant threat of her home city looming over her and being out of the Academy, she will relax more, though she will worry excessively over what has happened to her fellow Judges and Rookies, and the block on her psychic abilities. Also the Warden obviously needs to be arrested.
Physical Description: At about 5’5, Anderson is not a dominating figure, but she holds herself well and where she’s from, height isn’t too much of a concern when you’re a Judge. She is as muscled and fit as she can be with her rather slim figure, and she wears her blonde hair in a messy bob. She can be deemed very pretty by conventional standards.
Magical powers or special skills: Anderson was a relatively late recruit to the Academy of Justice – she was a young child, as opposed to a toddler. Still, from that point on she has been subjected to the rigorous combative training all trainees are forced to undergo before attempting to become Judges – they live and breathe Academy life and experience total immersion into giving the law. She can operate a multitude of vehicles, practice basic first aid (‘basic’, of course, for a futuristic society), and knows the Law like the back of her hand. Her knowledge (and practical applications) of weaponry, tactics, and fighting styles makes her matched only to another judge. Basically she is ten kinds of badass.
In addition to that, Anderson is also a mutant, due to being born so close to Mega-City One’s boundary to the Cursed Earth. She is a psychic, and is able to read minds in a multitude of ways – she can even climb into someone’s mind and run the show, though she can’t control them. Her sense of people can even trump physical barriers, though she has more trouble in those instances. Her talents are still evolving as she finds more and more practical applications for them.
